The Florida Committee of the NMWA

Closely affiliated with The National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA,) the Florida Committee identifies and promotes women artists in the visual, literary, and performing arts. It also educates the public about women artists from the past and those active today.

The National Museum of Women in the Arts

Located in the heart of the nation’s capital, it is the only museum in the world dedicated exclusively to recognizing the contributions of women artists. Its permanent collection spans more than 400 years from the 16th century to the present.

Artistic Activity

Central West Region

Viola Motyl-Palffy’s recent work Space Symphony II reflects her trademark “brilliant contrasts between darks and lights with warm, hushed undertones,” as described in the 2006 edition of “New Art International.” In 2005, the Slovakian native, who divides her time between Citrus Springs, Florida, and Switzerland, was awarded the Gold Medal for Life Achievement Representing Slovak Art and Culture Abroad. Her work has appeared in the United States, Japan, and throughout Europe.

Southwest Region

Val Sandell’s “Paintings of Historic Spanish Point” were on display at the site’s Visitor’s Center Exhibit Gallery from February 13 to April 30. The photo, taken at the opening, shows Val with her painting, “Sunset from the Footbridge.” The oil paintings, created in the Plein Air style, capture for posterity an artistic record of Historic Spanish Point’s beauty and history. Proceeds from the sale of the paintings will benefit the 30-acre archaeological, historical, and environmental museum.

Northwest Region

From June 20 to July, The ArtPort Gallery at the Tallahassee Regional Airport will feature the work of members of the Florida Committee’s Northwest Region. The pieces on display encompass a wide range of talents and media, including sculpture, photography, fused glass, monoprints, collage, acrylic, and oils. The artists are Jackie Boulanger, Terrie Corbett, Lillian Garcia-Roig, Janice Hartwell, Jaye Houle, Ann Kozeliski, Jesse Lovano-Kerr, Lesley Nolan, Susan Peacock, donalee pond-Koenig, Leslie Pucket, and Linda Van Beck.

Central & Central East Region

Eve Tanselle (on the left with her sister-in-law Julia Redmon) recently celebrated the installation of oil painting Sandhill Cranes, at the DeBary Golf and Country Club, which commissioned the piece. A resident of DeBary, which is located in Volusia County, Eve is a widely published book illustrator.
